New Year, new adventures ahead

Set a healthy and community-spirited New Year's intention by making sustainable transport part of your lifestyle in 2023.

Wishing you a happy New Year from all at Derwent Valley Line Community Rail Partnership! At this time of year many of us are considering new habits or intentions for ourselves for the year ahead. Have you thought of making Community Rail part of yours?

Choose a greener way to travel

There are lots of benefits to using public transport more often, including the train. By using the train instead of a car, you can:
– Reduce your carbon footprint – after walking, wheeling and cycling, the train is the lowest-carbon form of transport, according to the Community Rail Network
– Improve our local environment by reducing noise and air pollution
– Reduce traffic congestion in our Derwent Valley rural and urban communities, from busy villages like Matlock Bath to the bustling cities of Derby and Nottingham

Improve your health

According to the Campaign for Better Transport, people who use public transport get an average of 20-30 minutes extra exercise per day compared to those who use a car. This could help you meet the recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day which brings a host of health benefits, from improving cardiovascular health to better mental wellbeing.
According to Living Streets, 74% of adults in England agree that reducing the use of private motor vehicles would be beneficial for health. So why not pledge to use the train instead of the car once per month or once per week, to get started?

Volunteer for a good cause and make new connections

If you’re looking for a way to help your community and improve your local station, you could volunteer as a Station Adopter. The role generally requires just a couple of hours per month of your time at your local station, and you don’t need previous experience. An interest in gardening and your local area is helpful; it’s a great way to meet new people and feel good about helping your community.
