Local treats and eats in Derwent Valley

With Easter on the way, it's the perfect time to sample some locally crafted treats. Hop on the bus or train to explore Derwent Valley and enjoy a taste of Derbyshire.

Bakewell pudding and Bakewell tart

Get on board the bus from Matlock to visit the home of these well-loved local treats. Bakewell is a picturesque market town, where you can find The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop for delicious bread, bakes, afternoon tea and of course its namesake pudding. You’ll also learn the difference between Bakewell Pudding and Bakewell Tart, key knowledge in Derbyshire! They are both almond-based and sweet, perfect for an afternoon treat.

Derbyshire Oatcakes

Traditional Derbyshire oatcakes are similar to a savoury pancake, made with oatmeal. They are great with sweet or savoury fillings, from traditional favourites such as cheese and ham or more contemporary flavours like salmon and cream cheese, or chocolate spread for a sweet pudding.
You’ll find this traditional recipe on the menu in a number of cafes in Derwent Valley, including Matlock Cafe in Matlock.

White Peak Distillery gin, whiskey and rum

If you’re looking for a taste of locally-crafted spirits, hop on the train to Ambergate and head to White Peak Distillery for a tour. It’s the perfect reason to use the train, too. See their website for more details.

Wirksworth Wakes Cakes and Thor cakes

Both of these traditional recipes were enjoyed at seasonal festivals, during the summer “wakes week” holiday and on Bonfire Night respectively. Take the bus from Matlock or Cromford to explore the historic, quirky town of Wirksworth, where you can find plenty of bakeries, delis and pubs. Then have a go at creating your own taste of Derbyshire with these traditional recipes: Wirksworth Cookery
