Masson Mills

Sir Richard Arkwright's 1783 water powered cotton spinning mill built on the banks on the River Derwent at Matlock Bath.

A commercial cotton spinning mill until 1991, now home to a Textile Museum, Visitor Centre, offices and meeting and event spaces.

The Visitor Centre gift shop and cafe is open Monday to Friday 11am-4pm.

The Textile Museum is open on weekdays for self-guided and guided tours with machinery demonstrations.

Discover the machinery that industrially revolutionised the processing of raw cotton in to spun yarn and woven fabric. Explore the extensive collection of textile machinery on a visit to the Weaving Shed, Doubling Room, Victorian Workshop & Bobbin Room all within Sir Richard Arkwright’s 1783 cotton spinning mill.

From the 25th March the Textile Museum will be open Monday to Friday:

11am-1pm Self Guided Bale To Bobbin Experience (booking not required, last entry 12:30pm)

Explore the Doubling Room, Weaving Shed, Victorian Workshop & Bobbin Room at your own pace with regular doubling and weaving machinery demonstrations.

1:30pm Guided Tour (booking recommended call 01629 581001 or email info@massonmills.co.uk)

Full guided tour lasting approximately 1.5hrs. Starting in the Visitor Centre with a short introductory film, you will be guided around the Doubling Room, Weaving Shed, Victorian Workshop, Bobbin Room, original water wheel location & current hydro electric turbine, weir, Boiler House and Steam Engine House. With several machinery demonstrations including the cross compound steam engine.

Masson Mills is a 1 mile walk from either Cromford or Matlock Bath stations.

Walking from Cromford Station – scenic 1 mile walk:

Exit the station via the car park and follow the footway to cross the riverbridge (take care crossing the bridge as the pavement is narrow) to reach St Mary’s Church.  Enter the church ground and follow the follow the riverside walk (past the side of Cromford Mills) for a scenic shortcut with some fabulous views of the splendid Willersley Castle, built for Sir Richard Arkwright.  The riverside path leads to Derby Road from where Masson Mills can be seen to your right..

Walking from Matlock Bath Station – 1 mile walk through Matlock Bath:

Exit the platform via the car park, cross the riverbridge and turn left past The Midland public house. Follow North and South Parade alongside the river, passing various shops. Continue past the Grand Pavilion and walk for about another 5 minutes along the main road to reach Masson Mills.

There are frequent bus services including 6.1, TP and X17 from outside Matlock Bath Station on the A6 Derby Road. See bus times from Matlock Bath here
