Train Service Changes – May and June 2023

• The hourly Nottingham - Derby - Matlock train service will be re-instated from Monday 22 May.

• Buses will replace trains between Derby and Matlock from Saturday 27 May until Sunday 11 June*.

• Buses will replace trains between Nottingham and Derby on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June.

Trains fully reinstated between Nottingham, Derby and Matlock

The summer timetable change on Sunday 21 May brings the reinstatement of trains between Nottingham, Derby and Matlock, throughout the day on Weekdays and Saturdays.

This will provide an hourly Monday to Saturday train service between Nottingham, Derby and Matlock. This will include trains every two hours calling at Attenborough and Spondon, in addition to existing peak hour weekday services.

Buses Will Replace Trains 27 May to 11 June

Engineering work from Saturday 27 May to 11 June* will see buses replacing trains between Derby and Matlock.  Network Rail will be closing Milford Tunnel, between Duffield and Belper to carry out a complete renewal of life expired components and ballast.

As a result rail replacement buses will operate between Derby and Matlock, with trains serving stations between Nottingham and Derby.

This engineering work has been planned by Network Rail for over a year and also includes the closure of Clay Cross Tunnel, to the south of Chesterfield, for full track replacement including drainage, sleepers and ballast. Summary of Changes to Train Service between Nottingham, Derby and Matlock from Sunday 21 May:

  1. Sunday 21 May: The first trains of the day – 0756 from Derby to Matlock and 0839 from Matlock to Nottingham ,will be replaced by buses.
  2. Monday 22 until Friday 26 May: ‘All’ trains throughout the day to/from Matlock re-instated to Nottingham.  See link below to new ‘Nottingham to Matlock Train Timetable from 21 May 2023’.
  3. Saturday 27 May until Sunday 11 June: Buses replace trains between Derby and Matlock with the closure of Milford Tunnel between Duffield and Belper. N.B. Rail Replacement Bus Services will NOT operate on strike days – Wednesday 31 May, Friday 2 and Saturday 3 June.   4. Monday 12 June to Friday 16 June:  Nottingham – Derby – Matlock train service reinstated. See link below to new ‘Nottingham to Matlock Train Timetable from 21 May 2023’.
  5. Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June: Buses replace trains between Derby and Nottingham, with trains between Derby and Matlock.  See link below to ‘Nottingham – Derby Bus Replacement Timetable 17 and 18 June’.
  6. From Monday 19 June full resumption of Nottingham – Derby – Matlock train service. See link below to new ‘Nottingham to Matlock Train Timetable from 21 May 2023’.

A reduced mainline service will operate to/from London with one train per hour between London St Pancras International and Sheffield via a diversionary route and will not call at Derby. One train per hour will also run from London St Pancras International and terminate at Derby.  This also means there will be bus replacement services at Belper to replace the mainline train calls at Belper. CrossCountry Train services will operate via a diversionary route between Derby and Chesterfield resulting in an extended journey times. See link below to ‘Changes to Cross Country Trains 27 May to 11 June’.

Scouts Summer Planting Project at Matlock Bath

Matlock Scouts took the train to Matlock Bath and helped the station adopters plant up and water the platform planting barrels.

This planting session follows on from an evening talk about the Derwent Valley Line and safety on the railway. The Scouts will also be using the train for a summer evening walk.

These activities form part of the Scouts Platforms for Change initiative which is a collaboration between Community Rail Network, the Scouts and the rail industry to engage Scout groups through community rail activity, station projects and rail confidence trips.
