Highlighting Heritage: The View from the train – The Derwent Valley Line

Delve into the history of the Derwent Valley Line.

Delve into the history of the Derwent Valley Line, starting from the development of waterways and early railways in the area, the first railway to reach Derby and the “Tri-joint” station.

Continuing on, this talk covers the opening of the North Midland Railway, early railway excursions to Matlock and the arrival of the Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, discovering people, interesting stories and how the network and individual stations developed.

To conclude, the talk describes a trip from Derby to Rowsley along the railway, looking at the historic railway infrastructure and buildings and other important heritage sites that can be seen from the train.

Doors open at 7pm with refreshments available, (talks start at 7.30pm).

This is one talk in a series of collaborative events between the Arkwright Society and Belper North Mill, looking to reveal interesting aspects of local heritage. Six evening talks, from March through to October, will alternate between venues in Cromford and Belper.
