All aboard this summer!

School's out for summer, so here are our suggestions for family-friendly things to do in Derwent Valley.

Get there by train

Did you know that children under 5 travel for free by train, and children aged 5-15 travel for half price? The return train fare for children is approximately £3.50 between Derby and Matlock and approximately £4.50 between Derby and Nottingham. You could also save up to 60% off children’s rail fares with a Friends and Family Railcard.

Play in the park

Hall Leys Park in Matlock, Derwent Gardens in Matlock Bath and Belper River Gardens are great places to play and have a picnic. They each have a playground, buggy and wheelchair-friendly paths and offer plenty of places to explore.

Go on a walking adventure

Walk by water along Cromford Canal, or wander amongst wildflowers at Duffield Millenium Meadows. Attenborough Nature Reserve is free to enter and an easy walk from the train station. Download our family activity walking trails here.

Marvellous museums and galleries

Derby Musuems are free to visit, including Pickford’s House, Derby Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of Making. Nottingham Contemporary is free to enter and runs free family events throughout the school holidays. Derby Museums and Nottingham Contemporary both welcome donations, so please give what you feel able to.

Striking New Artwork Unveiled at the Matlock Station Footbridge

An impressive 3.4 square metre artwork depicting a Midland Railway 1000 Class steam locomotive has transformed Matlock Station Footbridge..

This type of locomotive was a common sight in Matlock until the 1960s.

The Unveiling Ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate the transformation of the pedestrian approach to Matlock Station.
